I found that disabling SSL under Eudora's "Tools-Options-Checking Mail", helps a bit. Disabling windows XP's Cleartype helps also (display properties->appearance->effects->use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts). However the slowness associated with high CPU usage persists.
